Background of the Study

Obesity and hypertension are two of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) globally, and their comorbidity significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and other chronic health conditions. In Nigeria, civil servants are particularly at risk of these conditions due to sedentary lifestyles, work-related stress, poor dietary habits, and limited physical activity. Bauchi State, like many other regions in Nigeria, has seen an increasing rate of both obesity and hypertension. Civil servants, who often work long hours in office settings, may exhibit higher rates of these conditions due to factors such as job-related stress, insufficient physical activity, and poor dietary choices. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State, examine the contributing factors, and explore the potential health outcomes of these comorbidities.

Statement of the Problem

Obesity and hypertension are prevalent among civil servants in Bauchi State, and there is limited understanding of the extent of their comorbidity and how it impacts the workforce. The lifestyle of civil servants, which often involves long hours of sedentary work and poor eating habits, may increase the risk of developing both conditions simultaneously. The comorbidity of obesity and hypertension is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases and other serious health conditions, yet the extent to which these conditions affect civil servants in Bauchi State remains understudied. This study seeks to assess the prevalence of obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State and to examine the associated health implications.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State.
  2. To identify the factors contributing to obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State.
  3. To evaluate the health outcomes associated with the comorbidity of obesity and hypertension among civil servants in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State?
  2. What are the main contributing factors to obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State?
  3. What are the health outcomes associated with obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a high prevalence of obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State.
  2. Sedentary behavior, poor dietary habits, and work-related stress contribute significantly to obesity and hypertension comorbidity among civil servants in Bauchi State.
  3. Obesity and hypertension comorbidity is associated with adverse health outcomes, including increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, among civil servants in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on civil servants in Bauchi State, specifically examining the prevalence of obesity and hypertension comorbidity and the factors that contribute to these conditions. Limitations may include the self-reported nature of some data, which could introduce bias, and potential difficulties in accessing certain groups of civil servants in remote areas.

Definitions of Terms

  • Obesity: A medical condition characterized by excessive body fat, typically measured by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
  • Hypertension: A condition where blood pressure levels are consistently higher than normal, typically defined as 140/90 mmHg or higher.
  • Comorbidity: The presence of two or more chronic diseases or conditions in an individual at the same time.
